The Outer Banks of North Carolina from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
Duck, Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk have the same zip code. However, Duck and Southern Shores consider themselves apart. So, for residents, Kitty Hawk is south of Southern Shores and now home to the Hilton Garden Inn. Kitty Hawk has many full-time residential areas on the sound side. Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills (south of Kitty Hawk) have some of the the widest land mass of the Outer Banks and the only bridge (note the Welcome to Kitty Hawk sign), the Wright Memorial, connecting the Outer Banks to the mainland of Currituck and Highway 158/168. The bridge is three miles long, connecting Currituck to Dare County at the narrowest passage of the Currituck Sound between Dare and Currituck counties. The bridge was opened in 1930 and was crossed 1150 times within 10 days of opening.

Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina
Kill Devil Hills, south of Kitty Hawk, is the birthplace of aviation. The historic event of the first flight in 1903 by the Wright Brothers is beautifully commemorated by the Wright Memorial. Kill Devil Hills also has a large established full-time residential area on the west side of Highway 158. Full-time residences overflow to the east side of the highway where they are mingled with vacation rental homes. The closer you get to the ocean, the higher the concentration of vacation rental homes.

Nags Head, North Carolina
Nags Head is home to the famous shifting sands of Jockey's Ridge State Park. The top of this pile of sand gives a unique view of the ocean, the sound, Roanoke Island and surrounds. The Ridge beckons you to run or tumble down its side while hang-gliders from Kitty Hawk Kites' classes practice nearby. Like Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head has a concentration of full-time residences west of Highway 158 and vacation rental homes on the east side. Nags Head was for years the named destination for all trips to the Outer Banks. It is one of the oldest towns on the Outer Banks. Nags Head is also home to Pirate's Cove Marina home to numerous fishing tournaments and events.

Manteo and Roanoke Island, North Carolina
Manteo is located on Roanoke Island 10 minutes from Nags Head and the beaches. Manteo on Roanoke Island is more of a year-around community with very few weekly rentals. Downtown Manteo has been restored in the last few years with local shops and restaurants all within a six-block area, so park the car and walk or bike. The best way to describe Manteo is “a quaint waterfront town, rich with history.” There is always something happening at the Roanoke Island Festival Park during the summer months with free concerts, plays and exhibits. Manteo on Roanoke Island is also home to the Elizabethan Gardens and The Lost Colony playing nightly during the summer months. You will also find the North Carolina Aquarium which is a favorite of kids, young and old. Plan to spend a day on Roanoke Island to enjoy all it offers.
